choosing your domain name

You have decided to set up a website for your business or a professional blog. You are ready for your audience to see what you are all about, the first step is to think of a name for your online presence and then of course, picking a domain name that reflects this name and shows personality.

It is quite common to find that the domain names you think of off the top of your head are usually not available and owned by someone else who would like A LOT of money for them.

So how can you come up with the perfect domain name for your website?

  1. Brainstorm keywords that mean something to your business, get as many keywords you can think of and look at what your competitors are called. Synonyms are a great idea too – so you can find words that mean the same thing as what you are after.
  2. Check the availability of these keywords – run your words through HostGators domain search and you can see if you can get the domain available.
  3. Narrow down your options based on what’s available.
  4. Decide if you would like more than one domain name. This can be important for you so that others are prevented from buying similar names to your business.
  5. Decide on an extension for your domain name - .com and .co.uk are the most popular however there are many others available and you can decide depending on the nature of your business.

Here are some more tips for buying your domain name:

  • Buy a domain name that is the same name as your business name. This makes everything consistent with your brand.
  • Make your domain name easy to type – do not include lots of numbers or hyphens. This makes your domain name harder to remember. Also remember that the more complex your domain name is the harder it is to write down, say if you were talking to somebody on the telephone and needed them to write it down.
  • It is a good idea to try to hint at what your business does in your domain name. e.g. maddiespizzas.co.uk – is a pizza restaurant.

So, to summarise, when selecting a domain name make sure that you have thought extensively about your business and your brand.
